Section 1 of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution begins: All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.
Some Republican politicians (with the exceptions of John McCain and Mike Huckabee) want to remove that provision of the U.S. Constitution. I believe that would be a huge mistake.
This is just one of those fundamental things about America, that makes being an American so great. This is a country based on freedom & liberty. And sometimes protecting those concepts is hard. We have to believe in freedom of speech, and freedom of religion, even when people are saying things that we personally abhor, because we want those same freedoms for ourselves.
Yes, sometimes people will take advantage of those freedoms that Americans have. There are people on Welfare, or who are collecting unemployment, that are lazy and don’t want to work. That doesn’t mean we cut out those programs altogether. And, yes, there are illegal immigrants who come here to have “anchor babies”, and that’s wrong. But, nevertheless, if you are born on American soil, that makes you an American. Period. That should not be changed. Ever. For any reason.
