Well, here it is, the miniseries finale. There’s not much I can say without spoilers. I’ll just say that there were some good little Easter Eggs were thrown in for fans of the novel, like we learn what happened to several of the supporting characters, which I liked, but overall I have to say that I was disappointed with this ending.
We learn that somehow, 4 years after his arrest, Donald Kimball managed to escape and possibly faked his death, as he is considered to be presumed dead. Instead, he’s been traveling the world under a different alias, continuing to kill people, and he’s been writing letters to Patrick once a month for the past 20 years. And then, through some shenanigans, he returned to New York, where he found out about Charlene’s existence. He’s been orchestrating things in her life because he’s trying to bring out her murderous side to pick up where Patrick left off…or something. Even holding the book in my hands now, I can’t quite follow the “logic” of his motivations.
It ends with Patrick’s murderous impulses restored and a three-way showdown between Patrick, Kimball, and Charlene, which leaves all their fates still up in the air, which is what makes this so disappointing.
It’s a shame; it started with so much potential, but they couldn’t stick to the landing.
