The issue opens with Jeff investigating a murder case that he suspects is somehow tied to his former career with Youngblood. Then we switch to the current Youngblood team attending a black-tie ceremony where President Obama is honoring Die Hard for his over 60 years of military service. But Die Hard surprises everybody with his speech where he complains about how the government has been using him as a super soldier and upgrading him with cybernetic body parts to prolong his life. This causes a bit of a commotion among the crowd which is then broken up when a horde of zombie soldiers armed with laser guns attacks the ceremony. So then we get to see Youngblood in action against the zombies, and this ends with another cliffhanger involving former Youngblood member Badrock.
It’s a slight improvement, story-wise, over the first issue. Writer John J. McLaughlin seems to be setting up some intriguing mysteries with the apparently supernatural figure who is behind the zombies (and President Obama is possessed by some kind of demon), and that may or may not also be connected to the murder that Jeff is investigating. My only continuity complaint is that Badrock is referred to as being 16 years old, which he was when he was originally introduced but should be significantly older by this point.
Oh, and Photon is now called Lady Photon because, I guess just Photon is too masculine of a name?
Unfortunately, Jon Malin’s art is no better this issue, his character’s facial expressions are all either blank smiles or wide open mouths. It’s like he’s doing a bad imitation of Rob Liefeld’s artwork, but he doesn’t have Liefeld’s appeal. Still, at this point, I’m still interested in seeing where this goes.
