JOHNNY GILL – JOHNNY GILL (1990)

johnnygill_johnnygill

Before joining New Edition for their 1988 album HEARTBREAK, Johnny had already been a solo singer, and had released an album called Johnny Gill on Atlantic Records in 1983. In 1990 he released his 2nd solo album, also called Johnny Gill, on Motown Records which, with his new popularity, was a much bigger success. Gill enlisted producers such as the duos Jimmy & Terry Lewis, & L.A. Reid & Babyface, to give him a collection of R&B tracks written to cater to his strong and deep voice.

The album opens with the first single, RUB YOU THE RIGHT WAY, a dope jam that is one of my all time favorite songs. I use it my workout playlist to this day. The powerful ballad MY, MY, MY was the 2nd single. And the up-tempo tracks FAIRWEATHER FRIEND and WRAP MY BODY TIGHT are great songs that were the other two singles. NEVER KNOW LOVE is another dance track, while the remainder of the album is slow jams and ballads. FEELS SO MUCH BETTER, GIVING MY ALL TO YOU, and LADY DUJOUR are three of my favorites, while JUST ANOTHER LONELY NIGHT and LET’S SPEND THE NIGHT close out the album, with a romantic feel. Overall, a very good album.

  1. Oh, god this takes me back in teh day when I didn’t know about love songs in middle and high school. At the time, I didn’t know why the women were sweating him and then he made that appearance on Family Matters and Laura was all over him when he sung. I think I got it then.
