PREVIOUSLY: PRODIGY. #1

Now joined by rogue CIA agent Rachel Staks, Edison Crane heads to Moscow where must break into a super-secret vault inside of The Kremlin to find an ancient scroll which pertains to the invasion that is underway from a parallel reality. This rather difficult task is, of course, effortless to one as wealthy and intelligent as Edison is, and this once again gives Millar the opportunity to showcase Edison’s abilities in some unique ways.

But what’s really interesting about this issue is how it shows that this series has more of an occult bent to it, rather than the pure science fiction take that seemed apparent in this first issue. While we still don’t much about the parallel reality invaders, we learn that a secret centuries-old international cabal of wealthy men who appear to worship Satan and do such things as kidnap and hunt poor orphan children for sport in their spare time is in cahoots with the invaders. This is conspiracy theory stuff straight from the darkest corners of the internet and Millar plays it to perfection. They are presently unaware that Ethan is on their trail, but I’m looking forward to that inevitable confrontation.

Another fine issue from Mark Millar and artist Rafael Albuquerque, with a story that kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. I know it’s only two issues in, but I can already predict that Prodigy is going to be my favorite miniseries of this year. A+
