CHAPEL #5

Picking up from the cliffhanger in issue #4, Mt. Saint Helens erupts, but out of the volcano comes the gigantic figure of Lord Chapel, who erects a wall of fire around the neighboring city as he prepares to unleash his demonic assault on the Earth.

Or something.

Chapel arrives in New York City, armed to the teeth, hunting his old friend Al Simmons aka Spawn. They encounter each other, and Spawn taunts him into a hand-to-hand fight which lasts several pages (although Spawn should be able to handle Chapel easily) before Cogliostro shows up and convinces them to stop fighting each other and team up to fight Lord Chapel (which I would have assumed was the reason Chapel was looking for Spawn in the first place).

So, this book feels like it’s making less sense as it goes on. Spawn was still one of the hottest books on the market at the time, and since Chapel had a connection to the character, it feels like this story was connected just as an excuse to shoehorn Spawn into this title, probably for publicity. Robert Napton joins Brian Witten to co-write this issue storyarc, but despite having two writers, it’s still mostly a bunch of action scenes.
