BLAH BLAH BLAH

Here in SoCal we’ve been having a late-summer heatwave. Overall summer hadn’t been too bad, at least it didn’t feel any worse than usual, but then last week it suddenly shot into the 90’s and hasn’t gone down. Yesterday was the 3rd day in a row that it was 96 degrees, and it stays in the 90’s well into the evening. I got up at 5:30am today and it’s already 75 degrees. Today it’s supposed to “cool down” to 91 degrees. As longtime readers may know, I work as a shipper in a warehouse, so it’s already hotter indoors than it is outdoors. Add to the fact that we’re extremely busy this week, I had to work an hour overtime yesterday and I’m preparing to go in an hour early today, and it makes for one exhausting day. Any extra exertion turns me into a sweaty mess. Sometimes I can’t even wear my glasses, because my face is sweating so much that they’re sliding off of my face. It’s crazy. I know you people from the rest of the country probably think us West Coasters are just used to the heat but no, I’m not enjoying this. I am SO ready for some Fall/Winter weather. Bring on the cold, please!

Speaking of exhausted, Sunday I went to go see my friends Tina & Randy and their kids again, and once again I’m struck by how much work being with children can be, both physically and mentally. They have a 5 year old daughter and 7 year old son, and they are just two of the cutest little things on Earth, I love them to death but, dang, they can tire you out. The girl wanted me to pick her up and spin her around, so I did. Then she tells me to do it again, so I did. Then she tells me to do it again, but now I was dizzy! I just can’t keep up with them. I don’t how people who have kids in their late-30’s and early-40’s do it. I just don’t have that kind of energy anymore, you have to be young to have kids, in my opinion.

And speaking of raising children, an ongoing story has been that of football player Adrian Peterson and his arrest for child abuse, which I see how sparked conversations online about spanking. Now, I don’t have and never plan to have kids, so I know that in my folks’ mind that automatically dismisses any opinion I have on the topic. But this is MY blog so I’m going to say it anyway, I’m not comfortable with the idea of spanking children. I was spanked as a child, as were most people I know. Heck, when I was a wee lad you could still paddled by teachers in school. And I know many parents who do spank their children. So I’m not judging those who do, or saying flat-out saying that it’s wrong or right. But, whether it’s a quick swat on the butt with your hand, or multiple strikes with a belt or a switch (the Black folks reading this will know what a “switch” is), the premise is the same. You’re inflicting physical pain on someone in order to get them to behave the way you want them to. As Oprah once said, that’s what slave-masters did. So I just don’t think that if I had kids I could ever spank them.

And I know this is the part where all the parents who spank their kids will chime in and say “Until you have some, you’ll never know/Sometimes they just won’t listen and there’s nothing else you can do/etc.” Yeah, okay, maybe y’all are right. I don’t know. Just another reason I never want to have any, so I won’t have to deal with this issue.

I hope everyone has a great day!
