In this issue, Mary “wakes up” inside her nightmare. She realizes that she’s dreaming and thus Insomnia’s tricks don’t work on her anymore. This is a plot point straight out of Nightmare On Elm Street…that’s how Nancy beat Freddy the first time.

But it turns out that Insomnia has also trapped her foster siblings and parents in their dreams, so Mary has to enter “the dreamscape” to rescue each one of them from their own nightmares. One by one, she teams up with Daria, then Eugene, then Pedro, then Freddy. Mark Waid is clever with the way he shows how each of the kids’ nightmares it tuned to some real fear that they have, like how Daria is a little kid, so he nightmare is filled with giants, as that represents everyone who is bigger than her. But when it gets to Mary’s foster parents, she realizes that she needs extra help, and brings in the rest of her siblings to protect them in their dream.

But there is a cliffhanger involving that evil version of The Captain. It’s said to continue in the Knight Terrors miniseries. But the story still stands well on its own, and I don’t feel like I need to read that.

So overall this was a nice little 2-part story that I enjoyed, and it was nicely drawn by Roger Cruz. But I’m looking forward for Waid and Dan Mora to get back to their own planned storyline.
